Douglas and Cobane provide NHS eye tests and support the NHS optical voucher scheme. The scheme provides free spectacles, or contributions towards the cost of spectacles depending on one’s circumstances. See below to find out if you qualify.

You are eligible for an eye examination that is paid for by the NHS provided:

  1. You are under 16
  2. You are aged 18 or under and in full time education
  3. You are aged 60 or over
  4. You have Glaucoma or Diabetes
  5. You are aged 40 or over and are either the parent, sibling or child of a person who has or had Glaucoma
  6. You are considered to be at risk of developing Glaucoma by an Ophthalmologist
  7. You have been prescribed complex lenses under the NHS optical voucher scheme
  8. You are entitled to or are named on an NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate
  9. You are registered blind or partially sighted
  10. You or your partner receive Income Support, income-based Job Seekers Allowance, income-related Employment Support Allowance or Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  11. You or your partner have a valid HC2 or HC3 certificate

You may qualify for an NHS optical voucher if:

  1. You are under 16
  2. You are aged 18 or under and in full-time education
  3. You or your partner receive Income Support, income-based Job Seekers Allowance, income-related Employment Support Allowance or Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  4. You are entitled to or are named on an NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate
  5. You have been prescribed complex lenses under the NHS optical voucher scheme
  6. You or your partner hold a valid HC2 or HC3 certificate
If you are eligible for an NHS funded sight test please remember to bring your National Insurance number (where applicable) and your Health & Care Number with you to your first appointment. The latter can be found on your medical card if it was issued after July 2004. Otherwise you can obtain it by contacting your local GP practice.

It is helpful when you come for your appointment to bring your existing prescription for any eyewear (spectacles and/or contact lenses) you currently use, and details of any medication you have been prescribed.
